HEARTHWANE · GARDENER
human, 64
Was given a rose cutting by Arlen Holloway in payment for a broken frame, and grew it by the stove.
THEIR STORY
Orla Amberley came to Rimewick as a bride and stayed as a widow, and she built her garden under old green glass bought from the glassworks pane by pane. Roses bloom there all winter. She is kind to every traveller who knocks, and her guests sleep very well. Some of them stay a good deal longer than they meant to.

HOW THEY LOOK
Round and rosy, in a gardening apron over good grey wool, white hair pinned with a rose. Warm hands that do not let go quickly.
IN THEIR OWN WORDS
“Stay till morning. The road will still be there.”
“Tell me one thing you love, dear, and then sleep.”

Buried her husband in the spring thaw and began the glasshouse the same summer, so the house would not be quiet.
